Specialists engaged into complex reconstruction of a unique five-stand rod mill with four-roll passes faced challenge of improvement of automated electric drives. For this purpose, a more precise method of rolling torque computing is required that will enable a reliable calculation of the shaft torque and drive motor power. The proposed study is aimed at assessment of possible gauge diversification and determination of process restrictions imposed by the electric drive. The paper provides a combined process line diagram and functional diagram of five-stand mill electric drives. Dependencies required for determination of the rolling torque in various stands are compared. The paper provides a mathematical model of the mill under consideration that has been developed based on mathematical description of metal strain in the multi-roll passes and equations describing correlation of electromechanical systems through metal. Results of theoretical and experimental researches were compared.
