This paper presents an algorithm for network reconfiguration to improve reliability on real Eskom distribution networks, each with unique characteristics. The radial operation of distribution networks as well as the equipment limitations was considered when determining the optimal configuration. Historical data was used to model the performance of the components and also as a comparison to the key performance indicators obtained from DigSilent PowerFactory simulations to ensure accuracy and evaluate improvement on the system. The results of each case study considered are reported and discussed which display improvements in System Average Interruption Duration Index of up to 20% and improvements in System Average Interruption Frequency Index of up to 24% after reconfiguration.
