This paper presents a case study on sizing a phase shifting transformer to be located on a transmission line sensitive to overloading under N-1 network conditions. The line under analysis is a 220 kV line, which operates in parallel with a 400 kV line. This transmission line is located on the network section between Dobrogea, a peninsular area in the Romanian power system. The Dobrogea region is characterized by strong surplus of generation installed especially in wind power plants. During windy conditions, large amounts of power are transferred from Dobrogea either to the other areas of the Romanian power system or towards the Bulgarian power system. The aim is to identify the range of tap position of the phase shifting transformer for which neither the 220 kV line nor other transmission line will be overloaded under normal or N-1 operating conditions.
