The percentage of gas-fired generating units in China is increasing rapidly in recent years. Due to the uncertainty in natural gas supply and the shared usage by other industries and residents, the available natural gas supply cannot be predicted day-ahead precisely. To represent the stochastic nature of natural gas supply of power plants, we propose a two-stage stochastic programming model for the commitment of generating units. The first stage represents the day-ahead generation scheduling, and the second stage represents the real-time power system operation under different natural gas scenarios. We show the effect of natural gas supply uncertainty on power system operation using a case study based on the IEEE 57-node system.
