A message-passing multicomputer is presented, and its applicationto image processing and reconstruction is outlined. The multicomputermay be seen as a one-dimensional array of computing nodes withbidirectional shuffle and shift connections. The resulting shuffle-shiftmachine is well suited for tasks like image processing and imagereconstruction. A sample shuffle-shift machine has been built usingtransputers. The hardware and software aspects of this implementationare described, and benchmark results obtained with a number ofimage-oriented algorithms are included. The shuffle-shift machine iscompared with related parallel computer architectures, and atwo-dimensional generalization is indicated
