Hierarchical visual pattern image coding

Visual pattern image coding (VPIC) is a flexible image codingdevice offering excellent visual fidelity at high compression ratioswith unprecedented, extremely low coding complexity. Hierarchical visualpattern image coding (HVPIC) schemes which achieve significantlyincreased compression (approaching 35:1) with improved fidelity and thevery low complexity associated with VPIC are described. HVPIC employsstandard VPIC embedded in a multiresolution (pyramid) structure.Low-resolution images coded at the upper levels augment coding of thehigher-resolution images.
