Development of an Internet of Things Gateway Applied to a Multitask Industrial Plant

The evolution and diffusion of the information and communication technologies has reached the industrial environment and has enabled the exchange of information among entire manufacturing units, integration of the production chain, agility in data acquisition and automatic decision-making - this paradigm is labelled as the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In such context, this paper introduces an Internet of Things gateway applied to a multitask industrial plant that contains devices with different communication protocols, such as PROFIBUS, HART, Ethernet and MODBUS. The gateway is based on hardware and software that communicate with the industrial equipment via Siemens S7 and Modbus protocols and with a server developed in a cloud computing platform via Message Query Telemetry Transport protocol. This solution enables the monitoring and control of the process variables of the plant through an online graphical interface. Moreover, the measurement of the time spent to read the data of the Programmable Logic Controllers and their updating in the online interface shows that the communication between the server and the physical system presents low latency.
