Energy storage systems (ESSs) play an important role in addressing the increasing demand for flexibility in the power system, due to the increased penetration of renewable energy sources. Moreover, ESSs are also a cost-effective solution to network and system capacity shortages. In this setting, this paper analyzes the potential of ESSs to support the adequate operation of distribution networks by providing capacity services. Particularly, the ability of multiple ESSs to provide security of supply through a coordinated operation. The proposed solution was compared against traditional methods and assessed in two case studies: different demand conditions and reactive power capability. In addition, a sensitivity analysis, regarding ESS power and energy capacity, was carried out. The results demonstrate that a coordinated operation of multiple ESSs can further support distribution network operators (DNOs) managing peaks of demand. Furthermore, the studies have also shown that reactive power capabilities of ESSs can significantly increase the value of ESSs for DNOs.
