The Instrumentation of a Ride-on Car to Quantitatively Assess Performance and Progress for Children With Mobility Impairments

This paper describes the development of a modified ride-on-car to be used as a therapy tool for children with mobility impairments. The car is instrumented to allow for quantitative measurements to be made about a child's performance and progress in areas such as motor control, driving skills, and postural control. The proposed methodology for testing the effectiveness of the car for quantitatively measuring such progress is also discussed. Modified ride-on-cars have been qualitatively observed to have a positive impact on children with mobility impairments, and it is the intent of this research to create a tool that can be used to quantitatively measure the impact of modified ride-on-cars.
