We have demonstrated that anisotropic WAIM layers, which can be implementable using metamaterials, may be used to achieve superior wide angle impedance matching for phased array antennas. In order to successfully obtain wide angle impedance matching via anisotropic metamaterials, it would be essential to be able to reliably design sophisticated metamaterial layers with at least four degrees of freedom (uniaxial mu, uniaxial epsiv, variable thickness). In this paper, we propose the use of anisotropic WAIM layers, implementable using metamaterials (artificial materials made up of resonant L-C structures), to obtain superior impedance matching over a broad range of scan angles for these array antenna configurations.
