During the last 10 years CFD software technology has matured a great deal with respect to its capability and capacity to capture the range of physics that is typical of iron and steel making processes. These days the user environments supporting the CFD technologies provide tools to capture and repair geometry from CAD systems, to generate high enough quality meshes to facilitate most kinds of CFD analysis, and to enable high quality visualisation and graphical analysis of the simulation results. These tools also generally run well on low cost high performance parallel clusters, enabling larger than ever problems to be run within practical time frame for the engineenng environment. They also enable a wide range of physics to be captured and models to be set up quickly, at least by the CFD expert. There are improvements which are now emerging, that will help the community in the short term and we have indicated two in this paper - the use of vertex based mesh technology to capture the most extremes in geometrical complexity and inclusion of solid mechanics in the 'multi-physics' simulation of ISM processes. However, further advances, such as, in the representation of turbulence, await more significant research developments than have been achieved hitherto.
