The Munsell system is one of the most widely used color-order systems. The Munsell system uses cylindrical coordinate system with three fundamental orthogonal attributes called Munsell value, Munsell chroma and Munsell hue. Each is scaled with the aim of perceptual uniformity. The actual physical color samples are arranged according to the Munsell color-order system to form a color atlas, the Munsell Book of Color. In this study we introduce a simple transformation between actual radiance spectra of the chips in the Munsell Book of Color and the coordinates of the Munsell color-order system. The transformation is based on the Smith-Pokorny functions. It is shown that there is a good correlation between calculated and the original coordinates. It is also shown that the same transformation made to the Smith-Pokorny functions results to one achromatic response function and to two chromatic response functions in accordance to the opponent-colors theory.
