SPENT FUEL DISPOSAL AT OLKILUOTO, FINLAND

At present, the Finnish nuclear programme consists of two nuclear power plants, one in Olkiluoto and one in Loviisa, In Olkiluoto Teollisuuden Voima Oy (TVO) operates two BWRs 840 MW_e each and in Loviisa Fortum Power and Heat Oy (Fortum) has two PWRs, 488 MW_e each. These power plants provide about 25% of the Finnish electricity demand. The nuclear utilities are responsible for their nuclear waste management. The utilities established a joint company, Posiva Oy, in 1995 to carry out their spent fuel management responsibility. Posiva continues the spent fuel disposal programme started by TVO in the early 1980's.
