As a result of the recently completed 'Response-Based Design Applied to FPSOs' JIP this paper will serve to present, by example: Ⅰ.) A comparison of different response-based design methodologies using long-term extreme analysis and structural reliability analysis techniques for West of Shetland and Gulf of Mexico locations. Ⅱ.) Details of the significant benefits achievable from adopting a response-based design approach, taking into account reduced design loads and their impact on structural reliability. The two methods were found to produce similar results with 100-year line tensions and vessel excursions being approximately 20% less than values obtained from a traditional analysis of concurrent and collinear N-year return period wind, wave and current conditions. The 'Response-Based Design Applied to FPSOs' JIP was unique for a number of reasons, not least because it compared -two different methodologies, developed methods for applying response-based design to floating structures, considered harsh and complex environments and investigated the impact of response-based design on structural reliability.
