Automatic control is essential for efficient and reliable operation of wind power conversion systems. The major objective of this paper is to present a nonlinear method for pitch control of wind turbines operating at variable speeds. In this method the rotor speed is regulated via a pitch servo-mechanism. Because pitch angle cannot be adjusted directly and instantly, actuator dynamics are explicitly considered. The first order pitch actuator dynamics are integrated into the pitch control algorithm, which is shown to be effective in ensuring smooth and asymptotic rotor speed tracking.
