In the Hydro Power business the scope of a project varies from designingrncomponents for a turbine or generator to building a complete power plant. Arnproject that includes a complete plant has the highest complexity but at the samerntime opens the opportunity to optimize the components and the design to yieldrnthe best plant operation for the owner.rnThe Holtwood Powerstation, owned by PPL, is a new generating station to bernbuilt adjacent to the existing Holtwood Hydroelectric Project built in 1910. Thernexisting plant power output is 107 MW (143,432 hp) and has a flowrate of 892rncms (31,500 cfs). The new power station will add two vertical Kaplan machines,rneach with a rated output of 59.2 MW (79,380 hp) and passing an additionalrnflowrate of 424.7 cms (15,000 cfs). The contract for the turbines, generators andrnhydroautomation was awarded to Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, Inc. inrnSeptember, 2006. This paper will provide an overview of the organization of thernproject team and the methods used to complete the engineering work.rnThe Holtwood Powerstation, being a new plant, required the coordinated effortsrnof multiple engineering disciplines with the owner, consultant and variousrnsuppliers. The Voith Siemens Hydro project team structure and project executionrnprocess is designed to achieve this type of coordination. The benefits of therncoordinated effort included the full and early awareness of the customer'srnexpectations; the early and thorough sharing of insights across the board for thernengineering details needed; and the increased efficiency from avoiding delaysrnand rework. By executing the honed pre-defined process, the team was able tornproduce high-quality equipment designs for PPL's proposed project.rnOf particular interest is the project structure which allowed the project designrnteams for the turbines, generators and hydroautomation to work together with thernowner and the owner's engineering consultant prior to release for manufacturing.rnThis had its advantages and particular challenges that needed to be managedrnso that the proper technical information would be available when needed.rnThis project, being an expansion of an existing power plant, combines thernopportunities to optimize the components of a plant with the challenges ofrnapplying control concepts and design that are not different from the existingrnpower station.
