Selecting the right technology and implementation process for automation projects facilitates the transition and accelerates the installation, startup and commissioning activities for existing or new plants. The improvements in programming technology and availability of intelligent devices reduce the fabrication and integration time at the factory and in the field. This paper describes the platform, selection criteria, and provides examples of the modernization of the 10,000 MW Simon Bolivar (Gun) hydroelectric plant in Venezuela.rnThe Gun plant is in the process of upgrading the third generation control system. The plant is located on the Caroni River, and includes two powerhouses, 20 generating units and three switchyards (230 kV, 400 kV and 765 kV).
