Study on ecological treatment of sewage at Xinzhen River

Due to a serious lack of freshwater and serious river water pollution in Shenzhen city, China, studies on sewage treatment for the Xinzhen River in Shenzhen city were conducted. A 1-dimensional model (MIKE-11) was used to simulate the tidewater trace in order to find the furthest tidewater trace distance in Xinzhen River. A new connected channel and wide water gates should be built between Xinzhen River and Bi-boundary River so that tide hydrodynamics can be exploited. According to appropriate operating programs, the tidal energy can effectively cause the exchange of water body and improve water quality of Xinzhen River. The calculated result of ecological water requirement was 11 × 10~4 m~3/day at Xinzhen River and 12.5 × 104 m~3/day at XiXiang River. The total conducted pipe line is 11.17 km and the highest pump head is 23.99 m at Xinzhen River. The perfect aquatic plant system made up of emerging plants, floating leaf plants, submerged plants and floating plants such as Lotus, Calamus, Water Chestnut, Hydrilla verticillata, etc. can be used in water purification in Xinzhen River. Configuration of ecological landscape engineering must give prominence to indigenous plants and appropriately introduced outside plant species. In coastal cities some plants of constructed wetland such as Canna indica, Cyperus, Vetiveria zizanioide, etc., especially the mangrove, can improve the river water environment.
