This paper focuses on issues important to vortex-induced vibration (VIV) suppression design for marine applications. It begins with a brief discussion on the underlying mechanism of VIV suppression for two widely used devices: helical strakes and streamlined fairings. It then proceeds to analyze the effects of attaching the apparatus to a cylindrical structure. These effects include: (1) the lift force; (2) system damping; (3) drag coefficient; and (4) the dynamic properties of structures with helical strakes or fairings present. In addition, VIV suppression efficiency evaluation methodology is explored and experimental data are used to support the views expressed herein. Conclusions pertaining to VIV suppression design issues are presented at the end of this paper.
