Hydroelastic Response of the ISSC VLFS Benchmark

Driven in part by the motivation to simulate the wave-induced response of very large floating structures (VLFSs), there has been substantial development in computer codes for linear hydroelasticity in recent years. A recent International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress (ISSC) state-of-the-art report on VLFS design and analysis included a comparative study of the simulation results from different computer codes for a pontoon VLFS. The hydroelastic response of this VLFS model is investigated herein. The response is predicted by four different codes. Fluid models used are potential theory and linear Green Naghdi theory, and structural models are 3D grillage, 2D plate, and 3D shell. Despite some discrepancies, the models give similar results.
