BIOS DATA ANALYZER 3. MEASURES OF INFORMATION IN THE COMPLEX PLANE OF OPPOSITES

This article presents novel techniques to study the coexistence of opposites in natural processes. When only one time series is available, factor analysis reveals how many complementary factors must be considered. Coexisting opposites can be studied by calculating the sine and cosine of each term in the series, and plotting them in the XY plane to generate a complement plot, or by, generating two new time series through the addition of successive values of the sine and of the cosine, and plotting them in the X and Y axes {trigonometric walk). Each of these techniques allows one to distinguish a wide variety of patterns, including normal from pathological heartbeat series. In time series of heartbeat interval, weather variables, and a few other empirical time series the complement plot reveals an astonishing regular Mandala pattern.rnWhen opposites such as physical or psychological attraction and repulsion are measured separately, and then plotted on orthogonal axes {diamond of opposites). This allows one to identify highly contradictory processes, which are the most likely to produce change, creative or destructive. Multiple observations allow one to draw trajectories representing how opposites vary in relation to each other {phase plane of opposites). Linear scales (standard in psychological testing and sociological polls) do not allow the study of coexisting opposites.
