Competitive Hollow Plastic Part Processes is the subject of this mini-seminar. The objective is to familiarize those attending with the existing and emerging plastics processing technologies that are, or will become in the foreseeable future, competitive with twin-sheet thermoforming, blow, and rotational molding. Man has had a need for hollow parts ever since he became farsighted enough to store food and water for future use. Clay has been used as a manufacturing material since 8,000 B.C. Glass was discovered in 2,500 B.C. The potter's wheel and the blowing of glass were developed for converting these two useful materials into hollow parts. The first commercially successful plastic was cellulose nitrate, or celluloid, created by John Wesley Hyatt in 1868. One piece, hollow blow molded and thermo-formed celluloid parts became commercially available shortly thereafter.
