In case of a detected partial discharge (PD)-rnactivity in new power transformer during the deliveryrntest in the high voltage laboratory, the most importantrnquestion rises from both the customer as well as fromrnthe manufacturer: where is the PD-source? In such arnsituation, additionally to the measurement of apparentrncharge with a conventional PD-system, detection ofrnacoustical PD-signals can be used to localize the Pdsource.rnIn many cases, especially for PD-sources inrnthe solid insulation, or in the main insulation, there arernno acoustical PD-signals detectable. To open arntransformer for visual inspection without a clearrnindication about the position of the PD-source is notrnonly time consuming but also in many cases withoutrnany findings. In this contribution a non-standard Pdmeasurementrnand procedure to detect and localize Pdsourcesrnis described, which is successfully applied inrnthe laboratory as well as on site.
