Tyrannohex composites processed by UBE Industries is a new composite concept, which is based on a very high fiber volume fraction (typically 90%). Due to the strong interfacial bonding at the fiber-matrix interface, Tyrannohex composites behave rather as linear elastic bimaterials at room temperature, but a gradual change operates at high temperature (1200℃), where the composite effect appears and a large non linear region is shown on tensile stress-strain curves. The change is mainly connected to the crystallization of the silica matrix into cristobalite. All these features are discussed, along with observations under transmission electron microscopy.
