Carbon/Carbon composites (C/C) belong to the family of ceramic matrix composites (CMC). They may consist of different kinds of carbon fibers embedded in carbon or graphite matrices. The mechanical properties of C/C generally depend on the properties of their constituents and on the fiber content, the fiber architecture and the manufacturing method. The strength values of these materials are relatively low at room temperature (RT), however, they do not change at higher temperatures or even increase with increasing temperature. Therefore, the C/C composites are superior to all other structural materials at extrem high temperatures, e.g. at 1800℃ or more, provided that a non oxidizing atmosphere or an suitable oxidation protection can be realized.rnIn this paper strength values of specific C/C materials are presented as example. The strength and the failure behaviour are discussed considering different loading conditions (bending, tension, compression and shear) and test temperatures in the range between RT and 2000℃.
