A nitrate-citrate gel was prepared from nitrates and citric acid by sol-gel process. The thermal decomposition process was investigated by means of DTA-TG, IR and XRD techniques. The results revealed that the nitrate-citrate gel has self-propagating combustion behavior and the combustion process is related to the presence of nitrate ions. After combustion, the gel was directly transformed into single-phase, nano-sized NiCuZn ferrite particles with spinel crystal structure. Thus, a novel sol-gel auto-combustion technique having the advantages of inexpensive precursors and simple preparation process was developed for the synthesis of NiCuZn ferrite ultrafine powders.
