The results of a study that was conducted to compare the structure - performance behavior of a chromium-manganese steel (16HG - 16CrMn5) after conventional gas carburizing (850℃/1/10h) and vacuum carburizing (950℃/2h) and then quenched in distilled water, water polymer solution (polyalkylene glycol), conventional slow oil and low-pressure nitrogen) and then tempered are described here. The results showed that the carburized case structure consisted of martensite - retained austenite as well as carbides - martensite - retained austenite was obtained. Impact strength, hardness microhardness as well as changes of microhardness across the section were compared for water, oil and gas quenchants..
