Migrating Data from Heterogeneous Systems - a Case Study

National Savings & Investments, UK (NS) offers a variety of account based and bond based products to its customers. To support their products, NS has developed a range of computerized systems which have been built over the years and, like other legacy applications, patches have been made from time to time to cater to changing requirements.rnNS has migrated some of its products to THALER, a generalized Financial Services package (developed by C&W, Belgium), in an incremental manner. This package is used for back-end operations. Premium Bonds (PB) is a special NS product in terms of the earnings for its customers. Here, customers win prizes (which are drawn monthly) instead of receiving interest or dividend earnings. The existing PB System needs to be migrated to the THALER system. At the same time, the unique PB Prize Draw Application needs to be re-designed to run in an integrated manner with THALER and provide improved in-built security features. Re-engineering would involve both application and data migration to the new platform. The new system would give NS a competitive edge and provide a stronger customer-facing image.rnSiemens Information Systems Limited (SISL), a Systems Integration Company from the House of Siemens, was entrusted with the task of taking the current PB application and data from the existing legacy ICL mainframe (Cobol) and UNIX (Oracle) systems to THALER and the new Prize Draw System.rnThis paper gives an insight to SISL's experience in carrying out data migration for this project.
