Habitat creation on old landfill sites

The authors have been involved in creating examples of semi-natural grassland and woodland on old landfill sites in Wolverhampton (in the West Midlands) since 1984. This paper describes the methodology used in creating species-rich grasslands on such landfill sites. The results obtained suggest that it has been possible to produce attractive and species-rich vegetation with significant nature conservation and amenity value, and that the methodology described could be used to create a positive end-use for landfill.
