This paper describes the present deterioration of the global environment and the pollution and damage to the environment caused by mining industry. The environmental impact of non-ferrous metals (NM) production in China is summarized with the emphasis on a number of effective environmental control measures and the achievements recorded in this field in recent 20 years. Sustainable development of China's NM industry should be targeted in consideration of simultaneous improvement of economics, society and environment, based on technological renovation, clean production and environmental management.
