New concept of composite interphase which regards composite interphase as thirdcomponent of composite materials was introduced, and the effects of flexible interphase as anexample of functional interphase on failure initiation of composite materials were investigated. KneePoints of stress-strain curve identified by least squares method were corresponding to the AcousticEmission (AE) generating stress. Transverse crack of initial micro fracture was observed at the KneePoint. Flexible interphase with optimum thickness improved Knee Point stress, so that strain energyof failure initiation was increased.
