Discontinuous TiB/TiB+TiC reinforced Ti-6Al-4V matrix composites have been processed by theprealloyed powder metallurgy approach and characterized for their microstructure and mechanicalproperties. The effect of starting raw material powder size on the composite microstructure andmechanical properties at room as well as elevated temperatures have been evaluated. The effect ofreinforcement on the matrix microstructural evolution is described and the salient differences withrespect to the monolithic material are elucidated. The composites showed significant improvements(35-40%) in both stiffness and strength at room temperature as compared to the matrix alloy, andthese improvements were retained even at elevated temperatures up to 538°C.
