Snow cover has a great importance for the northern hemisphere, where the snow extends to 40 million km2 with a water equivalent volume of 3,000 km3. Monitoring the snow cover is important due to the fact that the snow-covered ground affects the energy exchange processes, annual runoff, weather and finally the climate. NOAA-AVHRR images with the spatial resolution of 1.1 km and a temporal resolution of two images per day are the best choice for the snow cover monitoring. There has been numerous ways to monitor the snow cover from the images of NOAA-AVHRR satellite
