In spring 1998 the institute tested an experimental ASMGCS-system in the airport Koln/Bonn delivering aircraft position errors with about 7m standard deviation. Sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) this experimental system shall be enhanced to aircraft-surveillance and communication on the airfield and in the control zone, because also that is under the regime of the tower controller. This paper describes the limitations of the existing ASMGCS-multilateration, which depends on aircraft distance and the necessary addition of distance measurement by interrogation. Without changing the station geometry the aim of the research is a high definition surveillance within 6NM range for a significant approach separation improvement
