In the numerical simulation of deep excavation process, although steps of modelling the geometry ofrnproblem domain and methods to simulate the stages of excavation and construction are pretty standardized, therernare still issues to be elucidated like rational choice of constitutive models, estimation of water pressure on thernretaining structures etc. This paper discusses mainly the merits and demerits of the two soil constitutive modelsrnthat are commonly used and their appropriateness in using them from their simplicity point of view and also theirrnsolution quality point of view. The other aspects covered are the water pressure simulation in the soil that results inrnthe water pressure force acting on the wall which is one of the major forces acting on the Earth Retaining andrnStabilizing System (ERSS) and the use of numerical approach for carrying out the Toe-in depth check. It is alsornbrought forward about the importance of instrumentation and monitoring data to validate the design assumptionsrnand identify the performance based design improvements.
