Malpasset Arch Dam Failure; a Starter for civil Rock Mechanics

The Malpasset Arch Dam failure opened the eyes of dam engineers worldwide on the need for newrnconcepts and new study means about the behaviour of rocks. None arch dam had failed before and none since,rnthough so many have been built and someone by far higher. Within two decades new scientific and technologicalrnimprovements brought to civil engineering a sound corpus deserving the name Rock Mechanics. Among mainrnpoints the water pressure into the rock foundation has been better understood as a trigger of the failure and was tornbe better controlled on next projects.
