An extensive multi-directional cyclic simple shear testing program on medium to high relative density, fully-saturated specimens of Monterey 0/30 sand has recently been completed. This paper briefly describes the experimental setup and methodology and then focuses on the effect of permanent shear stress, simulating sloping ground conditions and foundation induced stresses, on the pore pressure generation and shear strain response for some simple multidirectional stress path trajectories. Results from these tests provide benchmark "element level" information to help develop, refine and calibrate numerical tools to estimate cyclic and permanent displacements for liquefaction prone soils.
