Landslide risk assessment and management in the archaeological site of Machu Picchu (Peru)

The archaeological site of Machu Picchu, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1983, is affected by frequent landslides which threaten its security and tourism exploitation. In order to contribute to a proper site management, research activities on a local scale have been developed; these, combined with field surveys, monitoring and analysis, have been transformed into a geotechnical model of selected relevant phenomena, in order to assess the related risk. In the present work the following analysis has been implemented on a local scale: geomechanical characterization, passive seismic technique and stability analysis implementation. Such results allowed the implementation of a general evolutionary model in terms of response to geomorphological stress. The main result of the above mentioned activities is the landslide risk assessment for the entire area and the implementation of a master plan for the definition of mitigation measures and conservation policy for site management.
