Surface Analysis of Weathered HDPE Geomembrane Studied by LSCM and FTIR Spectroscopy

Surface of three high density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane (GM) samples was examined using laser scanningrnconfocal microscope (LSCM) after artificial weathering test. Although no significant changes were observed on thernsurface of the GM samples, it was found that the variation of roughness value was different among the three samplesrndue to differences in weathering resistance. Changes of surface chemistry were studied using Fourier transform infraredrn(ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy to monitor the development of photodegradation of GM samples. To estimate weatheringrnresistance, tensile properties and oxidation induction time (OIT) of GM samples were also determined after artificialrnweathering. The results showed that surface roughness have correlation with weathering resistance, although therncorrelation is not strong. And it still needs to be further investigated.
