Inter-working heterogeneous wireless access technologies are becoming increasingly affordable, and thus a growing number of mobile devices such as laptops, PDAs and handhelds are equipped to connect to multiple networks. In this paper, we present our practical experiences using the Mobile IPv6 protocol in an integrated WLAN-LAN testbed. We study on the performance issues during vertical handovers through detail analysis from captured packets of inter-network (i.e. vertical) handovers conducted over the testbed. Based on the observations, we propose a number of network-layer handover optimization techniques that improve performance during vertical handovers.
