Electrochemical reduction of ferrocenylfullero[C_(60)] pyrrolidine in toluene/acetonitrile (4:1, v:v) solution in the presence of [Pd(acetate)_2]_3, [Pt(μ-Cl)Cl(C_2H_4)]_2 or Ir(CO)_2Cl(p-toluidine) produces redox-active dark films that coat the electrode. The polymeric network is formed via covalent bonds between metal atoms and fullerene moieties. Ferrocene is linked to the polymeric chains through pyrrolidine rings. Films exhibit electrochemical activity both in positive and negative potential ranges. Oxidation of ferrocene groups is accompanied by transfer of anions at the solution/film interface and inside the solid phase. The transport of the supporting electrolyte cations is involved in the process of fullerene moiety reduction. Films exhibit higher permeability to the anion than to the cations. A substantial influence of the spacer connecting fullerene cages has been also observed. Films formed by the reduction in acetonitrile/toluene containing ferrocenylfullero[C_(60)]pyrrolidine and [Pd(acetate)_2]_3 exhibit the most reversible redox properties in positive and negative potential ranges.
