With 16 participating partners, the ESIS Technical Committee 1 “Elastic Plastic FracturernMechanics” has performed the EU sponsored project “Fracture Toughness of Steel in the Ductileto-rnBrittle Transition Regime” with the aim to validate statistical methods for deriving meaningfulrnmaterial property data as needed for failure assessment routines. In the project, a large fracturerntoughness data base was generated which quantifies specimen size and temperature effects onrnfracture toughness of the pressure vessel steel 22NiMoCr37. The data base was analysed byrnseveral statistical methods, that are the master curve method, the exponential curve fitting method,rnthe engineering lower bound toughness method and by multiple regression analysis. Therninvestigations indicated that several reliable statistical methods for treating fracture toughness datarnin the transition regime exist. The methods can be used to improve the present test practice forrncharacterising fracture of ferritic steels in the transition regime.
