Interfacial reactions for rare earth extraction can be expressed as follows:rnextraction RE~(3+)_((a) ) + 3(HA)_(2(0)) ======== RE(HA_2)_(3(0)) + 3H~+_((a))rnstrippingrnWhere RE represents rare earth, (HA)_2 is the dimer of P_(204) or P_(507). The forward reaction occurs in the external interface of liquid membrane and the reverse reaction takes place in the inner interface of liquid membrane. The driving force for transport and concentration of rare earths is provided by the use of the high concentration of H~+ in inner phase of liquid membrane.
