VCI-inhibitors in packaging of electronic equipment and their ability to protect against corrosion were compared with aluminium laminated vacuum packaging, which are widely used by electronic suppliers. VCI chemicals were impregnated into the softening materials. The fiber-based package materials were used as a substrate and different structures of packages were compared. Besides adding the VCI chemicals into the laminate, the different commercial solutions were also compared, such as VCI plastic bags and VCI foam pads. Tested materials were aluminium, copper, brass, AlZn-coated steel, Fe37, solder-material (Sn 63Pb37), hardened steel (MK 75) and electrically zinked steel. The samples were tested both in laboratory with cyclic damp heat according to IEC 60068-2-30 test Db and in field test. During field test period samples stayed in non heat-controlled sidewalk cabinet in tropical atmosphere in Bangkok, Thailand. Good protection was possible to achieve with VCI-inhibitors if the amount of VCI inhibitors were sufficient.
