The alkaline delignification of bagasse and wheat straw in soda cooks is characterized by two distinct phases. A rapid phase extending to approximately 75% delignification can be readily achieved, and was not related directly to the cleavages of β-aryl ether structures. This behavior differs distinctly from the delignification of softwood and hardwood, and appears to be related to a facile hydrolysis of the p-coumaric acid moiety. However, the residual delignification phase of these non-woods was also shown to involve lignin condensation reactions.
