ACHIEVING CLEANER PRODUCTION IN INTEGRATED NON WOOD AND SECONDARY FIBER NOLLS

Producing pulp and paper is no longer a question of price and quality. In addition it is a matter of how the pulp and paper was made to satisfy the environmental requirements. Questions are therefore asked:- 1. What raw material was used 2.What chemicals were used for process 3. What the effects are of mill discharges to the water we use and the air we breathe The cleaner production considered in this paper is not an end of the pipe treatment to make discharges acceptable to the environmental protection agencies. In contrast, it takes into consideration the quality of input materials for process to make operation environmenatally friendly and examines every technological step inside the mill to achieve:- 1. Savings in raw material usage 2. Reduce chemical usage 3. Reduce energy, both thermal and electric 4. Reduce water usage 5. Improve operating efficiency 6. Reducing spills, overflows and leaks through good maintenance practices 7. Providing proper training to all concerned in the mill on the importance of cleaner production
