The paper discusses the opportunities and challenges of using the Grid for model-based support for complex problem solving. It: summarizes the structured modeling approach applied to complex models, and illustrates modeling complexity by the RAINS model, one of most complex models actually applied to supporting international negotiations. Further, the paper presents the state-of-the-art of the Grid infrastructure, and discusses in more detail knowledge resources represented by analytical models, and by data sets collected during development of models, and those resulting from model analysis. The role semantic description of modeling resources (models, data, and modeling tools) is also discussed. Finally, the contribution of structured modeling technology to the vision of a semantic grid for future e-science infrastructure is outlined.
