A concentrated plasticity approach is presented in this paper, aiming at a more accurate evaluation of the inelastic behaviour of aluminium alloy joints. A new model is proposed, based on an energy equivalence with the actual spread plasticity structure. It is able to account for both the actual strainhardening feature of the material and the available ductility. In addition, it allows a proper set up of the simplified approach based on the concept of equivalent perfectly plastic hinge, as used in the codification on steel joints. The current method also provides an adjustment of the correction factors given in EC9 for the inelastic analysis of aluminium structures. Finally, a suitable procedure for the evaluation of the ductility demand in relation to the moment redistribution, is proposed.
