The European Zooming Model (EZM) is applied to simulate wind flow and air pollutant transport and transformation in the Greater Thessaloniki area (GTA). Quadruply nested grid simulations of the wind flow are performed for periods in the midst of the Thessaloniki '91 Field Measurement Campaign. Subsequently, pollutant transport and transformation is simulated by a robust one-way nesting algorithm, the resolution of the fine grid being as low as 500 m. The latter simulations are based on an emissions inventory characterised by fine spatial allocation and a high temporal resolution. The results show that sea breeze is the most important mesoscale flow feature in the GTA. In spite of some deviations between model predictions and observations, the EZM is found to reproduce satisfactorily the observed diurnal patterns of the main meteorological quantities and the ozone concentration in the GTA.
