This paper will examine the options for repair of pipelines and their flanged joints in deep water. The problems associated with the use of pipe repair clamps at depths beyond the reach of divers will be discussed, as will the choice of full enclosure versus injected seal repairs for flanged joints. A case study will be presented on an operation in which a defective flanged connection on a 10 inch water injection line was repaired in BP's West of Shetland Foinavon Field. This operation, conducted entirely by ROV in 500 meters of water, is believed to represent a world first.
